To be honest, having run cross-border errands between Shenzhen and Hong Kong for a long time, we’ve seen all sorts of requests. But whenever an order for a birthday cake comes in, we instinctively take a deep breath and prepare for a delicate mission.
Last week, we helped a returning client—a working mom living in Hong Kong—with a very special request.
🎂 A Story of Care and Logistics
To throw the perfect birthday party for her baby, this mom started planning a week in advance. She had her eyes on a specific bakery in Shenzhen (we’re seeing more and more Hong Kong residents ordering custom, high-quality cakes from Shenzhen due to the variety and value). She contacted us at Zerrand (Wukong Errand) early on to discuss the logistics.
That’s parental love for you. Even for a cake across the border, she wanted everything perfect. Her attention to detail was genuinely touching.
We scheduled the delivery for Saturday. To make sure the handover was smooth, she even arranged for family members to meet our runner directly in Hung Hom. Seeing the cake handed over in pristine condition—cream intact, decorations standing tall—was the best part of our day.
🚀 Why Does Cake Delivery Cost More?
Many friends often ask us: “Zerrand, how exactly do you calculate your fees? Why is delivering a cake more expensive than delivering a document?”
It’s a fair question, and here is the honest truth.
Standard couriers (like DHL or SF Express) often refuse to handle fresh cakes for cross-border delivery, or they can’t guarantee it won’t arrive upside down.
Cakes are arguably the most difficult items to transport.
- Must be Hand-Carried: This isn’t just about carrying a box; it’s about stability. Navigating customs, queuing at the border, and riding the MTR requires our runners to keep the box perfectly level at all times.
- Temperature & Time Sensitivity: Fresh cream cakes, flowers, or food with soup are extremely sensitive. One wrong move or a delay in the heat, and the gift is ruined.
- Customs Clearance: Our runners handle the customs procedures personally, ensuring the “goods” aren’t tossed around on a conveyor belt.
Therefore, our fees are based on difficulty and risk. While a shirt and a cake might cost the same to buy, the service fee for delivering the cake will be higher. We aren’t just delivering a product; we are safeguarding a birthday surprise that can’t be replaced.
Whether it’s a cake from Sam’s Club Shenzhen or a boutique bakery, if you need it delivered safely to Hong Kong, we are your dedicated runners.
